backend and platform engineering

What counts as an achievement for a backend engineer on LinkedIn

An achievement for a backend engineer is the scale the system ran at, and the number that got better because of you.

they screen on
system scale, latency, reliability, what shipped and who depends on it
the decision
They are deciding whether you have met their scale before, because the problems only exist above a certain volume.

duty line

Worked on the payments platform and helped maintain backend services.

no scale, no latency, no reliability figure

achievement line

Rebuilt the payments service handling 4,000 requests a second, cutting p99 latency from 820ms to 140ms for 11 downstream teams.

Same backend engineer, same career. The difference is that somebody asked for the numbers.

The 5 questions that produce those numbers

These are the questions a recruiter screening engineering hiring managers asks on a call. Answer them on paper and your profile writes itself.

1

What scale did your systems handle — requests, events or data volume at peak?

scale is the whole claim for a platform role

requests per second or day

2

What was broken before you, and what is it now — latency, error rate, throughput?

a fix without a baseline is not evidence

ms, %, before and after

3

What did you build that other people now depend on?

internal reach is how they judge seniority

system plus consumers

4

Did you cut infrastructure cost or build time? By how much?

cost per unit of traffic is the number staff engineers own

% or currency

5

How many engineers were on the team, and did you lead or review any of them?

it decides whether you read as senior or as a lead

Write your answer to each one down. A figure you cannot remember exactly is still better as a range than as a duty.

Why a backend engineer’s profile ends up with none of these numbers in it

Engineers describe the technology and leave out the load it ran under, as if the stack were the achievement. The stack is on 40,000 other profiles. The throughput is not.

A grader cannot fix this. It can only reword the lines already on the page, and those lines are the problem — there is no system scale figure in them for it to find. The numbers were never written down, so they have to be asked for.
